The Post-Revolution World

The Threshold is shaped by the people within it. Their hopes, their dreams, their memories. The people call for change, and it responds.

Buildings transform, twisting and moulding into structures as dynamic as those who inhabit them. Towers fall, replaced with something better – every Block forging their own monument to the past, or to the future. Why have a community hall when you can have a community garden?

Psychopomp harnessed guilt to keep people in chains, channelling it into energy to maintain their system of oppression. Potent, liquid shame, used to grow food and accelerate building projects.

Guilt might be the strongest basis for a system of control, but it isn’t the only emotion powerful enough to make change. Hope, joy, love – they become the new fuels of the Threshold.

The sky brightens to a vivid, inky blue, but the stars remain. Shining above humanity as it forges a new path; there are always stars. Gradually, the mist between Blocks begins to fade away, clearing the path for travellers to venture onwards.

Humanity pours out of the artificial confines of the Blocks, reuniting with loved ones and forming new connections. Some are lucky, their closest relations found in neighbouring Blocks, mocked by the years spent so close but so distant. Most must travel further, sifting through the masses of Psychopomp records to find a precious name stuck in a Block a ten month walk away. But still, they make the journeys. They meet each other halfway.

Reunions can be joyous or tragic. Many have always dreamed of seeing each other again – tears in eyes, running towards ecstatic embraces. Others have suffered memory losses – greeted by strangers who desperately claim to know them. Some go looking for revenge.

Anarchy reigns, as people reject government rule and decide for themselves. The streets are more dangerous – weapons exchanged, officials punished, buildings looted – but that is the price of freedom.

Over time, memories return, families reunite, society rebuilds. The people of the Threshold look towards eternity with hope. The world might be chaotic and messy, but it is so much more alive.
