Amnesiac

Piper Kennedy

She/they

Public bio:

A young artist in her early 20s, Piper is most often found in The Nest. Through the means of painting, Piper is trying to piece together who she once was, and through finding out her past mistakes find a way to better herself and ascend to whatever comes after. Piper seems to be constantly covered in paint, her simple clothes splattered with it and her face freckled with it. Never one to demand attention, she is content to blend in with the other people of the Block.

Are there any themes you would like your character to engage with? By extension, are there any you would like us to avoid?

I would like my character to engage with the themes of memory and the consequences losing one’s sense of self can have on a person.

Any preference for time period?

1980s/1990s.

Describe your character’s appearance. What is their death mark?

Piper has light blonde hair which she ties back revealing her many ear piercings. She dresses in very colourful clothes, and is constantly covered in paint. Her death mark presents itself as a purple, pink, and blue lines extending from her tailbone to the back of her head. The lines wrap around the vertebrae of spine.

You have amnesia, but the moments of your existence that were the most emotionally volatile are the ones the most likely to return to you. As such, you may remember your death, or one moment from your life. What is your single memory?

Piper only remembers her death. She remembers being in a dark crowded club, the flashing strobe lights obscuring her vision. She remembers an argument with someone she thinks she must have known, although who they were or what she was arguing with them about escapes her. Then she remembers storming off, tripping, and falling over the railing of the club’s balcony to the dance floor below. Then she remembers waking up in the Threshold.

How does your character feel, waking up without their memories. What is their initial reaction?

She feels scared and confused but most of all she feels helpless, without her memories she has no idea who she is and what she wants.

Sample Character 2 - Non-Amnesiac

What is your character's name?

Henry Aycliffe

What are your character's pronouns?

He/him

Public Bio:

Dressed in formal Victorian menswear, Henry seems completely at home in the finer places of Block 2845. His days are spent either completing his duties as a low-level official or kicking back in the spa or dining at the high-end restaurants. If you were to talk to Henry, regardless of the original subject he would soon begin recommending a variety of different spa treatments and the best meals at the restaurants of the Block.

Private Bio:

Henry was born in the 1850s to a lower middle-class family as the eldest of 7 children. His family put him through university after which he started working as an assistant to a banker. Through a mix of luck, underhandedness, and a few smart investments, Henry worked himself into the societal world of the upper-middle and lower-upper classes. Despite his comfortable living position and stable income, Henry constantly found himself wanting more. He wanted more money and to be more well-regarded. He devoted his life to progression through the social classes, and had no time for courting and relationships.

Despite his position as a low-level official, he cares little about ascending. He is happy to keep his life as it is. Henry will go through any means possible to not be left alone with his thoughts. While many citizens of the Threshold will use their time to reflect and grow Henry is happy to remain stagnant. He uses the spas and fine dining restaurants to pass the time and try to carry the standard of living he had in life into his death.

How and when did your character die?

Henry’s ambition came to an all-time high in the 1890s. He noticed discrepancies in the tax reports of a business competitor, Mr Thronton. He believed he had found proof of a simple case of tax evasion, and resolved himself to confront Thronton with his findings. Henry believed it would be simple – he would approach Thronton with proof of his evasion of tax and he would likely give him a large lump sum to ignore his wrongdoings. This, however, was not the case. He had underestimated how far his competitor would go to keep his name clean. As Henry dined with Thronton, he had felt his throat close up and his eyes blur. The world tilted and he collapsed, falling sideways off his chair onto the hardwood floor, his last thought being the revelation that he had been poisoned.

How does your character's death manifest physically in the Threshold?

Henry’s death mark manifests as a general greenness to his skin and hair, he constantly looks as if he were very ill.

What is your character's unfinished business?

Henry wants revenge. More than anything he wants to know what has happened to Thronton after his death – was he arrested? Did he get away with it? Was Henry’s death just swept under the rug? He wants to know why Thronton reacted the way he did – had he come across something more than simple tax evasion? Or did Thronton truly value his reputation that much that he was ready to risk murder to keep his white collar crimes hidden?

What does your character's 'life' in the Threshold look life?

Henry’s day is split into two parts: work and play. He spends a few hours a day working as a low-level official, pretending to fill in paperwork and coming up with excuses to leave his desk. When his work day is done, he is either in the spa or dining in the fine dining restaurant. Ascension is in the back of his mind but not a priority – if he ascends, he ascends, and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t. Henry largely ignores the majority of the events in the Threshold. While the Threshold may move fast, Henry keeps his life slow and as uneventful as possible.

What, in your character's eyes, does it mean to be a good person?

In my character’s eyes, a person’s goodness is related to their aesthetic more than anything. Henry harbours many classist beliefs from the Victorian era and therefore believes that a good person is one that desires to raise their social class and will go to any means to do so.
