Standing out against the skyscrapers and apartment buildings of Block 2845, there is a warehouse. The building is constructed of scrap metal, copper wire, and spare parts. As the extensions continued, the warehouse began to look more like a rusty oil rig than any type of warehouse the inhabitants of the block may have worked in. The need for rapid expansion meant the extensions were not coherent. The warehouse was originally two storage buildings standing side-by-side, eventually conjoined as more and more rooms began to stack up on top and the building began to have the appearance of being a body upon two legs.
Within the warehouse countless hours are spent packaging and preparing the food grown in the greenhouses. Rather than removing outdated equipment from the heights of the warehouse, new equipment is simply brought in. So it is not uncommon in the warehouse to see Industrial Revolution era packaging equipment immediately next to equipment from the 1990s. In that way, the warehouse acts as a museum to history of manual labour.
Those who work in the warehouse may have a variety of positions but are all joined by a desire to keep the cogs of Block 2845 turning.
Even if you don’t technically have to work in the Threshold, employment increases your chance of ascension. What better way to combat boredom and improve yourself than helping the Block function. While moving towards ascension is a reward in-and-of itself, in the immediate working in the block exponentially increases your chances of receiving better housing and therefore better amenities.
Where does the food come from in the Threshold? Well, everything has to come from somewhere, and from artificial sunlight, food grows. It's said that the love you put into something, you get back. According to the resident farmer, that’s exactly how the Threshold ecosystem works. There’s clearly a lot of love put into the food in the Threshold, as the rooftop farm stretches as far out as the eyes can see, greens and reds and oranges mingling together in a melancholic reminder of the life you left behind. With sprawling greenhouses and vegetable patches and allotments that always seem to be in bloom, the farm contains one of the only sources of “natural” colour present in the Threshold. Even if it’s a melancholic sight, at least they taste good, right? Eat your veggies, citizens! (Even if you don’t have to).
Working towards ascension isn't always smooth-sailing; confronting your life's shortcomings can be a stressful endeavour. So no one will blame you if, every now and again, you need to take a break, catch your breath, have a detox and relax. In times like this, the Elysium - our spa and wellness centre - will always be open to you, located just before the Warehouse District, and identifiable by its surrounding boundary of tall artificial rose bushes. As far as Snake Dens go, it's one of the more outwardly pleasant looking.
On the inside, the Elysium is a welcoming complex of tinted glass, complete with pools, saunas, heated baths, aromatherapy rooms and even sensory deprivation tanks. Just because you don't need sleep anymore, doesn't mean you can't benefit from a good day of rest, and the Block's foremost wellness guru, Zachary Plank, will be honoured to guide you through meditation, yoga, massage and anything else that might help you let off some steam. You'll be back to work in no time!
